pulp

Soft wet fiber

Pulp is soft, wet, shapeless matter—the fleshy interior of fruit, the fibrous material from which paper is made, or anything reduced to mush: The banana had turned to pulp.

To pulp something is to crush it into this state.

Pulp fiction refers to cheap, sensational magazines printed on rough wood-pulp paper, and by extension any lurid or lowbrow entertainment: a pulp novel, pulp horror.

To beat someone to a pulp is to pummel them severely.
