cortices

Brain surface regions

Cortices is the plural of cortex, the outer layer of an organ or structure.

In anatomy, it most often refers to the cerebral cortex—the folded outer surface of the brain responsible for higher functions like thought, perception, and memory: Damage to the visual cortices affects sight.

Other organs have cortices too: the adrenal cortex, renal cortex.
