insula
Cortex's hidden lobe
An insula is a block of buildings in an ancient Roman city, typically a multi-story apartment building housing ordinary citizens.
The term comes from a word meaning island—each block was surrounded by streets like water.
In neuroanatomy, the insula is a region of the cerebral cortex folded deep within the brain, involved in emotion, self-awareness, and bodily sensation.
