cambium

Tree's dividing layer

Cambium is a layer of tissue in the stems and roots of woody plants, located just beneath the bark.

This thin cylinder of cells divides to produce new wood on the inside and new bark on the outside, allowing trees and shrubs to grow thicker over time.

The cambium is what makes a tree's annual growth rings possible.
