inner layer
Beneath the surface
Inner layer refers to a stratum or component that lies beneath outer surfaces or coverings.
The term applies across contexts: the inner layer of skin (dermis), the inner layer of clothing worn against the body, or the inner layers of geological formations.
The inner layer of the jacket provides insulation.
In figurative use, inner layers suggest what lies beneath appearances: Peel back the inner layers and you'll find someone quite different.
