tribunes

Plebeian elected defenders

Tribunes were elected officials in ancient Rome who represented the common people (plebeians) against the aristocracy.

They held veto power over laws and could protect citizens from arbitrary state action.

The term extends to anyone who champions popular causes or defends ordinary people against the powerful: a tribune of the working class.

A tribune is also an elevated platform or gallery, especially in a church—a place from which to address the public.
