intervention

Action to help

An intervention is an act of stepping in to change the course of events, typically to prevent harm or improve a situation.

Medical interventions range from surgery to medication; political interventions may involve diplomacy or military action.

The word has a specific informal meaning for a planned confrontation where friends and family urge someone to address destructive behavior, especially addiction: Her family staged an intervention after she lost her job.
