imperium
Absolute sovereign power
Imperium is supreme power or absolute authority, particularly the kind wielded by a sovereign state or empire.
The word comes from Latin and retains a formal, sometimes archaic quality: the imperium of Rome, colonial imperium.
In ancient Rome, imperium was the legal authority to command armies and enforce laws.
The term appears in fantasy and science fiction to describe galactic empires or absolute rule: The imperium stretched across a thousand worlds.
