commander
One who directs
A commander is a person in charge—especially one who leads military forces.
In naval ranks, commander falls between lieutenant commander and captain.
The word extends to anyone exercising authority: the commander of the rescue operation, commander in chief.
To command is to direct with authority, and a commander is one who does so.
