curia

Ancient deliberative hall

A curia is an administrative body or court, particularly in the Roman Catholic Church where the Roman Curia serves as the papal administrative apparatus—the departments, tribunals, and offices through which the Pope governs the Church.

In ancient Rome, a curia was a subdivision of the Roman people or the senate house where they met.

The word appears mainly in historical and ecclesiastical contexts: The curia issued new guidelines on liturgical practice.
