cohort

Band of companions

A cohort is a group of people sharing a common characteristic or experience, especially for purposes of study or analysis: the 1990 birth cohort, a cohort of first-year medical students.

In ancient Rome, a cohort was a military unit of several hundred soldiers.

The word now sometimes means companion or associate, though this use draws criticism from traditionalists: The mayor and his cohorts dominated city politics.
