populace
General public body
Populace refers to the people living in a particular area or country, considered as a group.
It often carries a slightly formal or literary tone and may suggest the common people as distinct from elites or rulers: The new policy was unpopular with the general populace.
Unlike population, which emphasizes numbers, populace emphasizes the people themselves as a collective body with opinions, needs, or characteristics.
