rights

Freedoms people deserve

Rights are entitlements—things you're allowed to do, have, or expect.

Legal rights are guaranteed by law: the right to a fair trial, voting rights.

Human rights are considered universal: freedom of speech, freedom from torture.

Civil rights concern equal treatment regardless of race, sex, or other characteristics.

To read someone their rights is to inform an arrested person of their legal protections.

Rights also refers to ownership interests: film rights, mineral rights.

To rights something is to correct or restore it: She righted the overturned chair.
