Pompey

Roman general defeated

Pompey refers to Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (106–48 BCE), a Roman general and statesman who formed the First Triumvirate with Julius Caesar and Crassus before becoming Caesar's rival in civil war.

His defeat at Pharsalus and subsequent assassination in Egypt marked the end of the Roman Republic's old order.

In British usage, Pompey is also a nickname for the city of Portsmouth and its football club.
