rank

Place in order

To rank something is to assign it a place on a scale or in a hierarchy, the way you might rank your priorities, or how a reviewer might rank universities.

The rank of someone or something is their assigned place, like the rank of private in the army, or a page rank algorithm that search engines use.

An unrelated adjective rank characterizes excess of various kinds: rank corruption suggests that it’s out of control; rank vegetation may be hard to penetrate.
