Rulers without checks
Autocrats are rulers who hold absolute power, governing without meaningful checks from legislatures, courts, or citizens.
The term applies to dictators, absolute monarchs, and anyone who wields unchallenged authority: The autocrats of the 20th century left millions dead.
In looser usage, autocrat describes anyone who acts domineering or brooks no dissent: My boss is a total autocrat.
