trail
Hiker's worn route
A trail is a path through wilderness or rough terrain, typically made by repeated passage: a hiking trail, a nature trail.
Trail extends to any track or trace left behind—a trail of breadcrumbs, a paper trail, a trail of destruction.
To trail is to follow behind, either physically or in competition: Our team trailed by six points.
It also means to drag or let hang loosely: Her dress trailed on the ground.
A trailing plant grows along surfaces rather than upward.
