Sign is the most general term for something that represents, refers to, or indicates something else.
It is closely related to signal and shares some meanings with it.
A sign of aging is some indication that aging is happening: The wrinkles around his eyes were a sign he had reached the half-century mark.
A road sign is an informational marker.
A sign that you make by gesturing is intended to communicate a message: He gave the thumbs up sign.
Nearly all verbal meanings of sign are about affixing a signature as an indication of agreement or obligation: The contracts are not signed yet. Sign language is a language consisting of gestural signs; when someone uses this language, they are said to sign.
