yard

Linear measure or grounds

A yard is a piece of ground adjacent to a building, especially the area around a house: front yard, back yard.

In American English, yard typically means any outdoor space belonging to a residence; British English prefers garden.

Yard also denotes enclosed areas for specific purposes: shipyard, junkyard, rail yard, prison yard.

Separately, a yard is a unit of length equal to three feet or about 0.91 meters.

On a sailing vessel, a yard is a horizontal pole that supports a sail.
