park

Public leisure grounds

Usage of noun and verb park has resulted in their having fairly different associations.

The noun park, in most uses where no modifier is present, conjures up a place with lawn, trees, and perhaps pleasant walkways.

Other kinds of parks that are identified with a modifier acquire all of their associations from the modifier, pleasant or otherwise: car park, skate park, trailer park.

As a verb, the predominant use of park pertains to putting vehicles in a resting place: You can’t park there. Park your car across the street.

When used for something other than a vehicle, park is somewhat informal and means to settle something in a place, often temporarily: Why don’t you park the money in a savings account?
