drover

Livestock trail worker

A drover is someone who drives livestock, typically cattle or sheep, over long distances to market.

The occupation was especially prominent before railroads, when animals had to be walked hundreds of miles: The drovers pushed the herd north along the trail.

The word persists in place names and historical contexts but describes few modern jobs.
