stampede

Mass frenzied flight

A stampede is a sudden, panicked rush of animals or people fleeing or charging together.

Cattle stampedes were a danger on Western cattle drives; a loud noise could set the herd running.

The word extends to any headlong mass movement: a stampede for the exits, a stampede of investors dumping stocks.

As a verb, to stampede is to rush in panic or to cause such a rush: Don't let them stampede you into a decision.
