spoor

Wild animal sign

Spoor is the track or scent left by an animal, used by hunters to follow prey.

The word comes from South African Dutch and appears most often in contexts of African wildlife tracking: The guide found fresh spoor and knew the leopard was nearby.

Figuratively, any trail of evidence someone leaves behind: detectives following the spoor of the suspect.
