rangeland

Open cattle territory

Rangeland is open country used for grazing livestock, particularly cattle and sheep.

Unlike cultivated pastures, rangeland consists of native vegetation—grasses, shrubs, and other forage plants—that animals feed on directly.

The term is most common in the American West and other arid or semi-arid regions where the land is too dry or rough for farming.

The drought has taken a toll on rangeland across the state.
