switchyard

Where trains reroute

A switchyard is a railroad yard where cars are sorted and assembled into trains, typically using a series of switches and tracks to route cars to different destinations.

The term also applies to electrical substations where power lines converge and voltage is transformed or redirected: The storm damaged the switchyard, causing widespread outages.
