scat

Wordless vocal jazz

Scat has two unrelated meanings.

One is animal droppings, especially from wild animals: bear scat, coyote scat.

Wildlife trackers identify species by their scat.

The other scat is a style of jazz singing using improvised nonsense syllables instead of words—scatting over instrumental passages.

As a command, scat means go away quickly, usually directed at animals: Scat, cat!
