stand
Rise to feet
The many meanings of stand are rooted in the notion of being upright on your feet.
As a transitive verb, stand is part of many idioms such as stand a chance, stand trial, and stand your ground.
Stand can also mean tolerate, especially when used with a negation: I can’t stand rap music.
A stand can be a position you are prepared to defend (take a stand), or it can be a place where a particular thing happens, such as a concession stand or a witness stand.
