stand up

Get vertically upright

Stand up means to rise to one's feet from a sitting or lying position: Stand up when the judge enters.

It extends to remaining valid under scrutiny: That argument won't stand up in court.

To stand someone up is to fail to appear for a date or appointment, leaving them waiting.

As an adjective, stand-up describes comedy performed solo before a live audience, or a person who is reliable and honorable: a stand-up guy.
