fall

Season of harvest

As a verb, fall has a meaning similar to that of drop, but with an important difference: fall is always intransitive and does not take a human subject.

When you drop something it falls, but you can’t fall it.

When an event falls on a certain day, it happens on that day.

All of the noun meanings of fall are derived from the verb meanings: a fall is a change from a higher to a lower place, whether actual or figurative: The sudden fall in temperatures surprised everyone.

In North American English, the noun fall means the same as autumn.
