tower

Tall narrow building

A tower is a tall, narrow structure, either freestanding or part of a larger building: church tower, control tower, water tower.

Towers serve as lookouts, defensive positions, or symbols of power.

To tower over something is to rise high above it, literally or figuratively: She towers over her classmates.

An ivory tower is a place of privileged detachment from practical concerns. (Capitalized Tower often refers to the Tower of London.)
