rest

Take it easy

Two different words are represented by rest.

One can act as a noun or verb and relates to the refreshment that comes from stopping activity: Do you need a rest? The engine needs to rest a while or it will overheat.

Something at rest is inactive.

When rest precedes another noun, conveys this meaning: rest stop, rest period.

The other rest is a noun only and is largely synonymous with remainder.

It is what is left when some amount or quantity has been used or taken away: She’ll spend the rest of her life in prison.

People use the rest in a vague way to mean “all the others” when they assume their listeners will be able to identify what is meant.
