bear

Carry a burden

Bear is two different words with different derivations; context always makes clear which is which.

The noun bear designates a large furry mammal familiar throughout the world.

Bear may pluralize as bear or bears.

Figurative uses arising from the noun include the designation of a burly or uncouth man, or a market dealer who sells in anticipation of falling prices.

The verb bear has many related meanings, all having to do with the idea of supporting something, whether literally (bear weight or bear load) or figuratively (bear the brunt of her sister’s problems).

Bear is also used in place of have in language about reproduction and offspring, a meaning that is more familiar with the inflected forms bore and born.
