poise

Dignified self-control

Poise is an admirable quality that suggests confidence, comfort, and skill.

The verb poise originally had the related meaning balance (a bird poised on a wire), but is now frequently used in passive constructions to convey readiness: The Senate is poised to vote against the measure.

Sometimes when someone is described as poised, it just means exhibiting poise.
