Rest on buttocks

When you sit, your buttocks are on a flat surface – like a chair or the ground.

When a four-legged animal sits, its rear and all feet rest on the ground.

One object sits on another when it rests on top of it: The book sits on the shelf.

When a deliberative body sits, it is in session and doing work.

If you sit someone, you direct them to or provide them with a seat.

To sit is also shorthand for babysit, that is, care for someone else’s children.
