stand by

Ready to help

Stand by covers two main ideas: remaining ready, and remaining loyal.

To stand by is to wait in a state of readiness: Stand by for further instructions, Passengers on standby hope for empty seats.

The other sense means to support or remain faithful to someone or something: She stood by her husband through the scandal, I stand by what I said.

A bystander stands by in a different sense—present but not participating.
