lie

Falsehood or recline

Two important, mainly intransitive verbs are spelled lie.

To lie (past tense lay; usually said of a living thing, but also used of other physical things) is to assume a horizontal position: she was lying on a beach towel. The field lay on the other side of the river.

To lie (past tense lied; mainly said of persons) is to say something that is untrue: I lied when I said I hadn’t been here before.

A lie is the product of lying: His campaign promises have all proven to be lies.

Lie is also used to characterize something whose main element is untruth or dishonesty, even if it is not expressed in words: She has been living a lie as a dispossessed princess. #
