premise

Argument's foundation stone

A premise is a proposition that forms the basis for an argument or conclusion—the starting point from which reasoning proceeds: The premise of the argument is flawed.

In logic, premises are statements assumed true to derive a conclusion.

More loosely, premise means an underlying assumption: The movie's premise is that time travel is possible.

The plural premises refers to a building and its surrounding land: Smoking is not allowed on the premises.

To premise something is to base it on a particular assumption.
