shred

Tear to bits

A shred is a thin strip torn or cut from something: shreds of fabric, shreds of evidence.

To shred is to tear or cut into strips—shredding documents destroys them, shredding cheese prepares it for cooking.

In slang, to shred is to perform with exceptional skill, especially on a guitar or skateboard: She absolutely shreds.

If something is in shreds, it's ruined or torn apart: His alibi was in shreds after cross-examination.
