coconut
Palm tree fruit
Coconut is the large seed of a tropical palm, with a hard brown shell, white flesh, and liquid center.
The flesh is eaten fresh or dried (as copra), and coconut milk and oil are cooking staples.
The fibrous outer husk yields coir for rope and matting.
As a slur, coconut describes someone seen as betraying their ethnic identity—brown outside, white inside: accused of being a coconut for assimilating.
