cheese
Curd from milk
The curd of milk, separated from the whey, is subject to infinite further transformations; most of these are called cheese.
The foodstuff accounts for well over 90% of the usages of cheese.
All of the other minor senses of cheese have developed either because of a resemblance to cheese, or for completely obscure reasons.
A common slang meaning, important person (she’s a big cheese at IBM) is separately derived, from a Persian word meaning “thing.” Say cheese is the common expression used to alert people that their photo is about to be taken; the idea is that the teeth show when the word is pronounced, suggesting a smile.
