shroud

Concealing burial cloth

A shroud is a cloth used to wrap a dead body for burial.

The word extends to anything that covers or conceals: a shroud of fog, shrouded in mystery.

On sailing ships, shrouds are ropes or cables supporting the mast.

To shroud is to cover or hide from view: Mountains shrouded the valley in shadow.
