speed

How fast something

Speed is the act, quality, or capacity of moving swiftly.

It can refer to time, but more often refers to physical things moving through space, or abstract things covering a nominal distance very quickly: wind speed, the speed of the wildfire’s spread.

Before another noun, speed means either pertaining to speed (the speed limit) or done with great speed (speed dating).

As a verb, speed means to move or pass very quickly: the hours sped by.

Context normally clarifies when speed means to go excessively fast: He got a ticket for speeding. #
