mangle

Twist beyond recognition

Mangle has two unrelated meanings.

One is to damage severely by cutting, crushing, or tearing: The machinery mangled his arm.

Text or music can be mangled through poor handling: The translation mangled the author's intent.

The other mangle is a device with rollers for pressing water from laundry or smoothing fabric—now largely obsolete.

To mangle laundry is to run it through such a machine.
