cross-cut

Saw against grain

Cross-cut describes a cut made across the grain of wood, as opposed to along it.

A cross-cut saw has teeth designed for this purpose.

In film and video, to cross-cut is to alternate between scenes happening simultaneously in different locations, building tension or showing parallel action: The editor cross-cut between the heist and the police arriving.

As a noun, a crosscut is also a path that cuts across rather than following the main route.
