degaussing

Erasing magnetic fields

Degaussing is the process of eliminating or reducing a magnetic field, typically from electronic equipment or magnetic storage media.

The term comes from the gauss, a unit of magnetic measurement.

Ships are degaussed to protect against magnetic mines; computer monitors were degaussed to correct color distortion; hard drives are degaussed to permanently erase data.

The IT department degaussed the old drives before disposal.
