sew

Work with needle

Sew is to join pieces of fabric or other material by passing thread through them with a needle, either by hand or with a sewing machine.

The skill extends from basic repairs like sewing on a button to elaborate crafts like quilting and tailoring.

To sew something up means to close it with stitches, and figuratively to secure or finalize: They sewed up the deal before competitors could respond.

The past participle sewn is more common than sewed.
