Curse bringing misfortune
A whammy is a hex or evil influence, something that brings bad luck or puts a curse on someone.
The term comes from the comic strip *Li'l Abner*, where a character could cast spells with a look.
A double whammy is two setbacks hitting at once: The economy took a double whammy from inflation and unemployment.
To put the whammy on something is to jinx it.
