psychopathology
Study of disorders
Psychopathology is the study of mental disorders—their origins, symptoms, and development.
The term also refers to the disorders themselves or to the mental dysfunction present in a particular case: The defendant's psychopathology was evident in his behavior.
Clinicians speak of psychopathology when describing what's wrong with a patient's mental functioning, distinct from normal psychological variation.
