ICD

Medical coding system

ICD stands for implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, a device surgically placed in the chest to monitor heart rhythm and deliver electrical shocks when it detects dangerous arrhythmias.

Unlike a pacemaker, which maintains steady rhythm, an ICD intervenes in emergencies: The ICD fired three times during the episode.

ICD also abbreviates International Classification of Diseases, the diagnostic coding system used in medical billing and records.
