neurosis
Anxiety without psychosis
Neurosis is a term from psychology for mental disturbance that causes anxiety, obsessive thoughts, or compulsive behavior without loss of contact with reality—distinguishing it from psychosis.
The word is now somewhat dated in clinical settings, replaced by more specific diagnoses.
In casual use, neurosis describes excessive worry or irrational preoccupation: Her neurosis about germs makes travel difficult.
